The Augustana women's cross country competed at the Early Bird Invitational hosted by Western Illinois University on Friday, September 4 in Macomb, Illinois. The meet consisted of seven teams and the Vikings placed third behind Bradley University and Western Illinois University, both division I schools. Senior captain Ellen Adams (Glenbard North HS, Glen Ellyn, Illinois) was the top finisher in the 6000 meter race for Augustana, placing sixth with a time of 23:38.
Veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team scored 73 points, trailing the winning total of 28 by Bradley and the runner-up score of 55 by host Western Illinois. Illinois Central was fourth with 77 points, just four behind Augustana. Northern Illinois (99), Lincoln (185) and Knox (208) rounded out the field.
Nicole Benson of Bradley was the individual winner with a time of 21:58 while Carianna Cottone of Western Illinois took second in 22:59 and Emily Gustafson was third with a clocking of 23:10.
Following Adams was freshman, Sarabeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Illinois) finished 12th overall in 24:19 and Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Illinois) placed 13th in 24:22. Freshman Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wisconsin), took fourth on the Augustana team in 24:52, which placed her 22nd overall. She was followed closely by freshman Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Illinois), who took 24th in 25:03. Sophomore, Sarah Johnson finished strong with a time 25:38, which was good for 26th place and the seventh finisher for the Vikings was junior Kristin Sattizahn (Erie HS, Erie, Illinois), who was 29th in 25:46.
The Vikings were pleased with their showing and as the season progresses the team anticipates great achievements as key runners such as junior, Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Illinois), Krystal Damiano (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Illinois) and Sam Laskowski (Reavis HS, Oak Lawn, Illinois) all of whom are top seven runners, are able to join their teammates in competition.
This meet was a great building block for the season and the team should anticipate success as they travel to Normal, Illinois for the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship meet on September 18.
