2009 Season - Fidlow's goal and assist key win
After opening the season on Tuesday, September 1 with a tough 2-1 loss at Chicago, the Vikings bounced back on Friday, September 4 with a road win at Lake Forest. Third year head coach Brenton Joseph’s team defeated the Foresters by a score of 3-1, with three different players scoring goals.
Senior Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.) got Augustana on the scoreboard first when he scored his first goal of the season just 5:54 into the game. He tallied with an assist going to Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.). That was the lone goal of the first half as the Vikings took a 1-0 lead into intermission for the second match in a row. They led Chicago 1-0 on Tuesday before falling to the Maroons.
Early in the second half Augustana was able to extend its lead when senior John Linden (Fremd HS, Libertyville, Ill.) scored an unassisted goal at 49:36. Lake Forest cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal by Kosmo Kwiatkowski, assisted by Chris Haught Thompson at 67:51. Fidlow scored the third, and final goal of the afternoon for the Vikings when he found the nets at 71:30. Alex Bennett (Lincoln Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) assisted on Stanley’s goal.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was once again solid in the goal. He allowed just one score in 90 minutes of work and recorded two saves.
Augustana held a slight 15-12 advantage in shots although the Foresters had the edge in corner kicks by a margin of 6-4.
The Vikings are now 1-1 on the season while Lake Forest falls to 0-2. Augustana will be in action again on Tuesday, September 8 when Greenville comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Ericson Field.
