2009 Season - Freshmen start with fine showing
The Augustana men’s cross country 2009 season is off to a great start. The freshmen Vikings competed in the Augie Early Opener on Tuesday, September 1 at Credit Island in Daveport, Iowa where they took first place with a score of 21 points. Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Illinois) won the four mile race with a time of 21:16.
Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Illinois) had a fine showing by taking second place in 21:27 and Kyle McNicholas (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Illinois) was the fifth overall finisher in 21:41. Augustana’s fourth finisher and seventh overall finisher was Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Illinois) in 22:16. Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Illinois) and Dennis O’Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Illinois) were the nine and ten overall finishers in 22:30 and 22:38, respectively. Tommy Harris (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) finished twelfth overall in 22:50.
The young Viking runners were applauded by their fellow teammates and veteran coach, Paul Olsen at the finish line. In the team huddle, Olsen showed excitement for the freshmen’s impressive times and for what lies ahead for the 2009 season.
