2009-10 PROSPECTUS:
In 2009-10 Augustana will be looking to return to its perch atop the CCIW standings. The Vikings went 18-8 in 2008-09, finishing third in the league with a 9-5 record and ending a string of three consecutive undisputed conference titles from 2005-06 to 2007-08. Head coach Grey Giovanine, who has captured a total of four conference championships in his 10 seasons at Augustana, will have to replace six graduating seniors, four of whom were starters. Senior Matt Pelton, who earned second team All-CCIW honors in 2008-09, is the lone returning starter. Candidates to join him in the starting lineup include senior Terrence Green, who missed last season due to injury, juniors Kyle Nelson, Bryant Voiles (who will serve with Pelton as a co-captain) and Mike Avallone, as well as sophomore Brian DeSimone, all of whom made key contributions off the bench a year ago. Also in the mix will be a solid core of players, led by junior Drew Croegaert, who gained experience at the junior varsity level last year. By the time the 2010 CCIW season rolls around, the Vikings should be well-seasoned by an extremely ambitious non-conference schedule. Augustana will make the trip to Spokane, Washington for a game with Division I Gonzaga University on December 9. The Bulldogs reached the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament last year and were a consensus top-15 team in the national rankings. The Vikings follow that up with a game at two-time defending Division III national champion Washington University three nights later. Also on the slate are road games with WIAC power UW-Whitewater and defending Iowa Conference champion Buena Vista.
