2009-2010 Season - Vandersee shines in collegiate debut
DAVENPORT, Iowa – In the first meet of her collegiate career, Augustana freshman Megan Vandersee (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) proved that she belonged. She fired an 86, with a 41 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine to finish in a tie for sixth place individually at the Augustana Early Opener. The seven team affair was held on Saturday, August 29 at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport, Iowa.
She helped lead the Vikings to a third place finish in the meet, which was won by NAIA power St. Ambrose. Augustana totaled a team score of 367, 28 strokes behind the winning total of 339 put up by the Queen Bees. Viterbo, another NAIA school, was second with 343. Behind Augustana was Mount Mercy, still another NAIA institution, with 372 while the St. Ambrose junior varsity was fifth at 394. Monmouth took sixth with a total of 396 and Iowa Wesleyan was seventh with 424.
Victoria Bown of St. Ambrose won the individual title by carding an eight over par 80 (40-40) while her teammate, Caitlin Childers, tied for second with Chelsey McCoy of Viterbo. Both players shot 82 with Childers going 39-43 while McCoy had a 42 on the front nine and came back with a 40 on the back nine.
For Augustana, sophomore Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) ended in a tie for 10th place with a 91 (47-44). Senior Katy Macheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) and junior Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) both finished in a tie for 18th place with identical scores of 95. Mascheri went 50-45 while Berens was out in 49 and home in 46. Freshman Morgan Wilkinson (Westmont HS, Westmont, Ill.) had a 96 (50-46) for 23rd place and senior Liz Scarlata (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) was 37th at 105 (54-51).
This meet ended up being the first competition of the season for veteran head coach Ron Standley’s team as the Mount Mercy Invitational, which was supposed to be the opener a day earlier, was cancelled due to rain.
