2009 Season - Vikings ranked 11th in first poll
The 2009 men’s cross country season does not officially start until Tuesday, September 1 but already the Augustana Vikings are making some noise nationally. The first NCAA Division III poll was released today and veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team is ranked 11 th. The poll was conducted by the United States Track & Field/Cross County Coaches Association.
Augustana, which has made two straight appearances in the NCAA Division III national meet and a total of 24 in the program’s history. Last year the Vikings were 21 st in the nation at the national meet after finishing fifth in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. They were ranked 15 th heading into the national meet.
Olsen has over 60 runners on his roster and he welcomed back 20 letter winners and six top seven performers from a year ago. The first meet will be the Augustana Open on Tuesday, September 1 at Credit Island in Davenport, Iowa. Following that meet the Vikings will compete at the Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois on Friday, September 4 at 5:00 p.m.
