The Augustana Jamaica Program is a foreign termexperience open to any Augustana student, but it is particularly relevant to education majors. During winter break, participants learn about the island and its culture, travel to and tour Jamaica, and serve as teachers in one of three Kingston schools (Alpha Boys School, Alpha Academy, and Alpha Primary School). More information about the partnering schools and a link to the Program's Facebook page is available at http://bit.ly/augiejamaica.
St Augustine, Florida
In May, Dr. Deb Bracke accompanies six students to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, Florida for a 5-day immersion experience. During their placements in special education classrooms, students explore how the methods used to teach students who are deaf and/or blind impact their own understanding of 'best practices' with regard to teaching and learning. The culmination of this experience occurs when participating students present their findings at a National Conference. Past presentations have included the Council for Exceptional Children Conferences in Denver and San Antonio. Here is a link to an article about one of the previous trips.
