2009-2010 Season - 2008-09 WOMEN'S GOLF REVIEW
The Augustana women’s golf team competed in four events this spring, highlighted by a trip to Savannah, Georgia to compete in the Savannah College of Art & Design Spring Invitational. The Vikings also finished second at the Augustana Invitational. In the fall, the team had a fourth place showing at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships. The Vikings shot a team score of 699 at the Springbrook Golf Course in Naperville, Illinois.
Senior Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.) led the squad with a scoring average of 83.1. She finished with 1,163 strokes in 14 rounds of play on the course. Gahn led the Vikings in scoring at all 10 tournaments and compiled six finishes in the top five as well as a seventh place finish after shooting a 167 at the CCIW Championships. Her top finishes came at the Augie Triangular on August 31, the Augustana Invitational on April 16, and the St. Ambrose Spring Invitational on April 25. She shot a 79 in the fall and an 84 & 80 in the spring, finishing in second place at all three events. Gahn’s best score of the year came in the second round of the St. Ambrose Classic when she fired a 74 and tied for third place out of 72 players.
Freshman Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) finished with the second best scoring average on the team at 90.3 per round. She shot a total of 1,264 in 14 rounds of play. Her best finish of the year came at the Augie Triangular where she placed fifth with a round of 83. Her lowest score of the year was an 82 at the second day of the Millikin Spring Invitational. Carr also finished 16 th with a two day total of 176 in her first experience at the CCIW Championships.
Senior Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was third for the Vikings with a scoring average of 91.3. She finished with 1,095 strokes in 12 rounds of action. Her lowest score of the season came in the opening round of play at the St. Ambrose Classic when she fired an 81 to lead the Vikings. Arizpe was second for Augustana at the CCIW Championships, finishing tied for 14 th place with a score of 174.
Freshman Alexa Fontana (Freeport Aquin HS, Freeport, Ill.) completed the fall season with a scoring average of 95.7. She had 574 strokes in six rounds on the course. Her low round of 89 came at the Monmouth Invite where she place 22 nd in the 88 player field. Fontana was fourth for the Vikings at the CCIW Championships with a score of 184. Fontana did not compete during the spring season.
Sophomore Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) had a scoring average of 99.9 and took 1,199 shots in 12 rounds of play. She shot a 91 at the Monmouth Invite, finishing third for the Vikings and tied for 26 th place.
Junior Katherine Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) compiled a season average of 101.4 with 1,420 shots in 14 rounds for Augustana. She saved her best round for the final time on the course in the fall, shooting a 90 and scoring fourth for the Vikings on the second day of the CCIW Championships.
Junior Elizabeth Scarlata (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) had 925 shots on the course in nine rounds of action, compiling a scoring average of 102.8. She shot a 97 in the first round at the St. Ambrose Classic.
Sophomore Courtney VandeWiele (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) played seven rounds and took 729 shots, finishing with a scoring average of 104.1. She completed a round of 96 at the North Central Invite, placing second for the Vikings and tied for 34 th in the 73 player field.
Senior Shasta Ketcham (Danville HS, Danville, Iowa) played in seven rounds and had a scoring average of 113.6 with a total of 795 shots. She had a round of 106 in the season ending St. Ambrose Spring Invite.
Head coach Ron Standley’s Vikings competed in 10 events this season, finishing runner-up at the Augie Triangular and also at the Augustana Invitational out of 10 teams. The Blue & Gold were third at the Mount Mercy Invitational out of 12 teams. Augustana was also fourth out of 13 teams at the St. Ambrose Classic, sixth out of 15 teams at the North Central Invite, and seventh out of 16 teams at the Monmouth Invite. The Vikings also added a sixth place finish at the St. Ambrose Spring Invite, a 10 th place showing at the Millikin Spring Invite, and a 12 th place performance at the SCAD Spring Invite. Standley led the squad to an overall mark of 64-46 this year.
