2009-10 Season - Men's basketball has 14th highest attendance
The Augustana men’s basketball team finished 14th in NCAA Division III in home attendance in 2008-09 according to figures released today by the NCAA. Veteran head coach Grey Giovanine’s club had 11 home dates during the past year and totaled 12,222 in attendance for an average of 1,111 per game.
That put the Vikings in 14th place, just ahead of the 1,101 averaged by Wisconsin-Platteville and behind the 1,115 of Whitworth College. Hope was the national leader with an average of 2,696 in 16 dates while Calvin was a close second with 2,553 in 13 games.
The biggest attendance figure for the Vikings in 2008-09 was the home opener on November 22 against defending NCAA Division III national champion Washington that drew 2,257. Of the 11 home dates, Augustana drew over 1,000 fans on five occasions. There were 1,746 in attendance for the January 31 game against Wheaton and 1,693 for a February 7 encounter with Carthage. Other games that drew over 1,000 included 1,479 on January 24 against Illinois Wesleyan and 1,078 on January 7 with Elmhurst in town.
Augustana has always enjoyed a tremendous home court advantage at the Carver Center, which opened in 1971 and underwent a massive renovation prior to the 2008-09 season. Since the building opener prior to the 1971-72 campaign, the Vikings are an impressive 388-97 (.800) overall and 224-63 (.780) in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action.
Since Giovanine took over prior to the 1999-00 season, Augustana is 108-21 (.837) overall and are 60-10 (.857) in the CCIW. In his first season Giovanine’s team was 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the league at Carver so if you throw those out, the Vikings are 101-16 (.863) overall and 56-7 (.889) in the CCIW since the 2000-01 season.
Fans will get an opportunity to see Augustana for the first time in the 2009-10 season on November 16 with a game against Simpson. A total of 12 home dates are on the upcoming schedule.
