2009 Season - Marissa Banks earns All-America honor
Junior Marissa Banks (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) earned All-American honors on Friday, May 22 by placing third in the discus at the NCAA Division III outdoor track & field championship. Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio was the site for the three day event. Banks was the lone competitor for the Augustana women’s track & field team and she threw both the shot and discus.
She recorded a toss of 151’ 0” in the disc on Friday in the preliminary round on her final throw. She was unable to better that distance in the finals. Ellie Sitek of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the event with a throw of 157’ 3” while Brittany Frederick of Wisconsin-Eau Claire took second with a heave of 153’ 4”.
Banks has now earned NCAA Division III All-American honors six times during her career. She was an All-American in the shot and discus outdoors as a freshman in 2007 and in 2008 she placed in the shot during the indoor national meet and in both the shot and discus in the outdoor championships.
She also competed in the shot put at the national meet in Marietta but her throw of 41’ 9 ¼” was not good enough to make the finals. Banks holds the Augustana school record in the shot and the discus. She has a best throw of 44’ 5 ½” in the shot and 158’ 9” in the discus. Both of those marks were recorded in her sophomore season of 2008.
