2009 Season - Duhai and Banks share MVP honors

A pair of field event competitors shared the Most Valuable Performer honor for the 2009 Augustana Vikings women’s track & field team. Senior Kelsey Duhai (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) and junior Marissa Banks (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) shared the award, which was given at the team’s annual banquet. Duhai competed in the long and triple jump events while Banks is a thrower.

Duhai recorded the team’s best marks in the long and triple jump. She went 18’ 1 ¾” in the long jump at the Northern Illinois Open in DeKalb, Illinois on May 9 and her best triple jump came at the CCIW meet in Kenosha, Wisconsin when she recorded a mark of 36 4 ¾”. She was a national meet qualifier in the long jump but was not chosen in the final field.

Banks was chosen at the “Most Outstanding Field Performer” at the CCIW meet in Kenosha, Wisconsin on May 1-2 when she won the shot (42’ 11”) and the discus (141’ 3”) and was fifth in the hammer (150’ 0”). She owns the best marks on the team in the shot and the disc. She threw the shot 43’ 5” at the Augustana Invitational on April 17 and she twirled the discus 150’ 2” at the Central of Iowa Invitational on April 4. She will compete in the NCAA Division III national meet at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio on May 21-23.

Rachael Latham (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.) and Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) shared the Most Valuable Freshman award. Latham competed in the middle distance events while Johnson was a distance runner.

Senior Susan Thompson (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was the winner of the Erica Vortman Viking award for spirit and enthusiasm. She also won the honor during the indoor season.

The Most Improved Performer award was shared by sophomore Hannah Schneider (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), junior Caitlin Quinn (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.), junior Jillian Rigert (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Allison Schaley (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.). Schneider ran the 1500 while Quinn recorded the best performance in the pole vault this year with a clearance of 10’ 10”. Rigert ran the 10,000 and Schaley won the CCIW title in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:04.95.

The 2009 captains were also honored for their contributions to an Augustana team that finished the season ranked 11 th in the NCAA Division III dual meet power rankings. Those captains were all seniors: Keli Coleman (Carmel HS, Grayslake, Ill.), Duhai, Karlene Fox (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.), Lindsey Homfeldt (Ottawa Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.), Paula Neiweem (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.) and Thompson.

The 2010 captains-elect were also announced. Captaining the 2010 team will be Banks, Valerie Bustle (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.), Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa), Samantha Laskowski (Reavis HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Quinn.
