2009 Season - Vikings will have competitors in five events at NCAA's
Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) will compete in two events at the NCAA Division III national track & field championship in Marietta, Ohio. McMillan will lead an Augustana contingent of four athletes at the meet, which will begin on Thursday, May 21.
McMillan, who won the high jump and the 400 hurdles in the 2007 national meet, will compete in both of those again. He qualified in the high jump with a leap of 6’ 9” on May 2 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. He ran :52.84 in the 400 hurdles on April 11 in Macomb, Illinois at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays.
Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and Andy Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) will be the other Vikings competing in the national meet. Decker qualified in the hammer throw with a toss of 182’ 5” at the CCIW meet on May 1 in Kenosha, Wisconsin when he set a new conference record. Christensen recorded a throw of 170’ 7” in the discus on May 15 at the Augustana Twilight Qualifier. That is a new Augustana school record, taking down the previous mark of 170’ 4” by Dave Lingner in 1981. Kubiak ripped off a time of 9:07.37 in the 3000 meter steeplechase on May 8 at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Illinois.
The Vikings actually reached the NCAA Division III qualifying standard in a total of 10 events during the 2009 season. Only McMillan, Decker, Christensen and Kubiak will compete at the national meet, however, as the others were provisional qualifiers who did not make it into the field.
Alex Stake (Williamstown HS, Sherman, Ill.) scored 6,208 points in the decathlon to qualify at the CCIW meet in Kenosha, Wisconsin on May 1-2. Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) hit the qualifying mark in the triple jump with a leap of 46’ 8 ½” at the Augustana Twilight Qualifier on May 15. McMillan also qualified in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :14.81 at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays on April 11 but chose not to run that event in the national meet. Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) hit the national standard in the 10,000 with a 31:05.83 clocking on April 17 at the Meet of Champions. The 1600 meter relay team of Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa), James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) qualified with a time of 3:15.32 at the Augustana Twilight Qualifier on May 15 and just missed making the field.
Augustana finished the season ranked number one in NCAA Division III in the dual meet power rankings for the second consecutive year.
