2009 Season - Banks to throw in NCAA meet
Junior All-American Marissa Banks (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) will compete in two events for Augustana at the NCAA Division III national outdoor track & field meet at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. The meet will begin on Thursday, May 21 and Banks will throw the shot and the disc. She earned All-American honors last year in the discus at the outdoor national meet and in the shot during the indoor season. As a freshman she was an All-American in both the shot and discus outdoors.
She qualified in the discus with a toss of 150’ 2” at the Central of Iowa Invitational back on April 4 in Pella, Iowa. She met the shot put standard on April 17 at the Augustana Invitational with a mark of 43’ 5”. She holds the school record in both events. Banks threw the discus 158’ 9” in 2008 and tossed the shot 44’ 5 ¼” also in 2008.
The Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside finished the season ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III power rankings. They met the NCAA qualifying standard in three other events but did not get selected for the final field. Senior Kelsey Duhai (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) qualified in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 1 ¾” at the Northern Illinois Invitational on May 9 in DeKalb, Illinois. Senior Paula Neiweem (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.) hit the mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 154’ 9” at the CCIW meet in Kenosha, Wisconsin on May 2. The 400 relay of Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa), Kai Frazier (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), Krista Dayton (Grinnell HS, Grinnell, Iowa) and Keli Coleman (Carmel HS, Grayslake, Ill.) went under the standard at the Augustana Twilight Qualifier on May 15 with a time of :48.33.
