2009 Season - Kubiak runs fourth fastest steeplechase time
Just one week ago senior Andy Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the number one ranked Augustana men’s track & field team. On Friday, May 8 he added another stellar performance in the event. Kubiak won the steeplechase at the Dr. Keeler Invitational on the North Central College track in a fine time of 9:07.37. Not only is that time good enough to qualify him for the NCAA Division III national meet that will be held at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio on May 20-24, but it is the fourth fastest time in Augustana history.
Kubiak won the event and finished just ahead of Nate DeHaan, an all-American from Calvin, who clocked 9:08.26. The only Augustana runners who have ever run faster are Sandu Rebenciuc (8:58.04 in 1993), Rob Jensen (9:02.73 in 1981) and Nick Johnson (9:06.29 in 2006). Rebenciuc, Jensen and Johnson all ran those times in NCAA Division III national meets and earned all-American honors with those performances.
Kubiak was not the only NCAA qualifying performance on the night as the 1600 meter relay team met the standard as well. The team of junior Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa), sophomore James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), freshman Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and senior Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) churned out a time of 3:15.70. That was good enough for third place in the event behind Wisconsin-Oshkosh (3:15.04) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (3:15.30) and just ahead of fourth place North Central (3:15.88).
Earlier in the meet, Davis was sixth in the 400 hurdles in :55.37, Ekberg took eighth in the 400 in :49.25 and Wood placed 13th in the 200 with a time :22.51. Junior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) finished 18th in the 5000 with a season’s best clocking of 15:02.97.
The rest of the Augustana team will compete at the University of Chicago Invitational in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday, May 9.
