Despite jumping out to a 6-0 lead through the first three innings, Augustana dropped a 14-12 decision to Wheaton and was eliminated from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin baseball tournament on Friday, May 8. The Vikings completed their season with a 23-17 overall record.
Senior John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) got things started with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings put three runs on the board in the second and then used solo home runs from Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) to add two more in the third.
Wheaton struck for seven runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead and piled on two more in the fifth to go up 9-6. In the bottom of the fifth Augustana scored a pair of runs to trim the lead to 9-8. Wheaton added a single run in the sixth to go ahead 10-8.
The Vikings claimed the lead with four in the sixth. O’Donnell doubled in a pair of runs and later scored on a Thunder error. That put the Vikings ahead 12-10 but Wheaton scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning after Augustana had retired the first two batters in the frame.
The Blue & Gold collected 14 hits with Lamb leading the way with three. Hoffman, Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.), O’Donnell and Barker all had two hits apiece. O’Donnell drove in three runs.
