2009 Season - John Wagle named to academic all-district team
Augustana senior John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) has been named to the ESPN – The Magazine academic all-district baseball team, it was announced today. Wagle, one of the leading hitters in Viking history, was a second team selection in District Five, which includes the states of Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. He was named as a designated hitter.
Wagle has appeared in 38 games for the Vikings this season and he is currently batting .343 with 57 hits in 166 at-bats while scoring 31 runs. He has eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and 27 runs-batted-in. He has walked 11 times and stolen nine bases.
He holds the Augustana career record for RBI with 148 and he is second in at-bats (643), hits (242) doubles (43) and triples (12). He is third in runs scored with 141 and tied for sixth in career batting average with a mark of .376. He holds the single season record for home runs (11 in 2008) and RBI (60 in 2008) and is second in hits with 80 in 2008.
Wagle has been a team captain each of the last two years and he is a two time first team all-conference selection in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. He also has been an all-region selection the last two years and was an NCAA Division III All-American in 2008.
He is a physics and business management major and carries a 3.42 grade point average. John is the son of Jason and Carol Lewis of Rock Island.
