2009 Season - Vikings outhit Titans but fall 6-3
Hitting was not a problem for the Vikings on Friday night in Bloomington, Illinois. Scoring runs against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans was, however, and the result was a 6-3 defeat in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action at Jack Horenberger Field.
Augustana collected 11 hits in the game but left nine runners stranded and the Vikings struck out 11 times against a pair of Titan hurlers. The Vikings fell behind 3-0 after three innings as Illinois Wesleyan put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second and one in the third against Augustana starter Mike Trotta (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.).
In the top of the fourth the Vikings scored their first run of the game. With one out Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) struck out but the ball got away from the Wesleyan catcher and Ramos reached first safely while Izzo went to third. Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) singled to center field to score Izzo. Augustana eventually loaded the bases but a double play ended the inning.
Wesleyan scored three runs in the fifth to make it 6-1. A double by Izzo leading off the sixth was followed one out later by Hopson’s single to left. Izzo scored on the play to trim the advantage to 6-2. The Vikings got it to 6-3 with a run in the top of the seventh. T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) doubled to left field and one out later pinch hitter John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) singled home O’Donnell. That was all the scoring for the evening however as the Vikings left one runner on in the eighth and two on in the ninth.
Hopson and O’Donnell each had three hits to lead the Augustana attack with Hopson collecting two runs-batted-in. Vezzetti and Izzo both had two hits.
Augustana is now 22-14 overall and 9-9 in the CCIW while Illinois Wesleyan moves to 22-12 and 13-6.
