Scott Mejia

Scott Mejia will begin his ninth year at Augustana in the fall of 2009 but just his third as the head women’s soccer coach only. Mejia was the head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs starting in March of 2001, but with the 2007 hiring of Brenton Joseph to lead the men’s program, Mejia was freed up to concentrate solely on the women’s team. His 2007 team finished 13-4-1 overall and 5-2 in CCIW play, taking third in the league, and the 2008 squad tied a school record for victories with a 15-4-0 mark and a 5-2 record in the CCIW.
Mejia came to Augustana after being the head coach of both the men and women at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
He had the task of replacing a pair of head coaches who ended their Augustana careers as the winningest coaches in their respective sports. Krisan Steiger was the only women’s coach in school history and she compiled a record of 78-63-10 from 1993 through 2000. Bob Estabrook was 82-45-10 from 1994-2000 as the men’s coach.
In eight seasons he has made his mark on the Vikings soccer program, compiling a record of 68-37-6 with the men and 104-45-10 with the women. With the 104 wins, he is the winningest women’s soccer coach at Augustana. The Viking men were 22-14-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin during that time frame, including a mark of 10-1-1 in a two year span of 2002 and 2003. In 2002 the Vikings won the first ever CCIW men’s soccer title in school history when they earned a co-championship with Wheaton. The Augustana women have been solid as well, compiling a 34-17-5 record in league play under Mejia.
It did not take long for Mejia to establish himself at Augustana as he led the men's team to an 11-5-2 overall record and a 2-2-2 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in 2001, his first year. Meanwhile the women were 10-10 overall and 3-4 in the CCIW in 2001 and goalkeeper Carla Wagner was selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-American team.
The 2002 season was even better as his men’s team went 16-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the CCIW, winning the school’s first ever league title in men’s soccer. Jason Ross led NCAA Division III in scoring with 30 goals in 20 games and Mejia was named the CCIW’s “Coach of the Year”. The women’s team was 13-8 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW, good enough for fourth place in the league.
In 2003 the men went 13-6-1 overall and 5-1 in the CCIW, placing second in both the regular season and in the conference tournament. The women were 11-7-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the league, finishing fourth in the regular season but taking second in the CCIW tournament. The 2004 season saw the men put up a 9-7-1 record overall and 3-4 in the CCIW while the women went 12-5-2 and 3-2-2.
In 2005, the men again were 9-7-1 overall and 3-4 in the conference while the women set a new school record for victories in a single season, going 15-4-1 in 2005 and earning a trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament. The Vikings played to a 0-0 tie with Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the first round but were eliminated on penalty kicks.
The 2006 season saw the men finished 10-9-0 and advance to the conference championship match while the women tied the school record for wins in a single season, going 15-3-3 and earning a second straight trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament. The Vikings broke through with a 2-1 victory over Grinnell in the first round, the first tournament win in school history for the women’s soccer program. Augustana fell to Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the second round of postseason play. Mejia’s memorable season with the women earned him “Coach of the Year” honors in the CCIW. He has never suffered a losing season at Augustana with either the men or the women’s teams.
Mejia was selected as the “Coach of the Year” in women’s soccer in the Lake Michigan Conference after the 2000 season when he led Lakeland to a 12-9-1 overall record and an 8-3-1 mark in the league. The year before that (1999) the Muskies set a school record for victories in a single season with 13 and they finished eighth in NCAA Division III in scoring offense. His two year record at Lakeland was 25-17-1 with the women.
On the men’s side of things he guided Lakeland to a 7-14-1 record in 2000 after finishing 4-13-1 in 1999. His 2000 team had the best record at the school since 1994 and he successfully built the roster from 14 players in the year before he arrived (1998) to 23. His two-year record at Lakeland was 11-27-2.
Prior to taking the head coaching position at Lakeland, Mejia was the assistant coach at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin from 1996-99. He has also coached at various clubs around the Milwaukee and Madison area.
He graduated from Edgewood in 1997 with a 3.75 grade point average and a Bachelor of Science degree in English. While at Edgewood he was a three time all-conference performer and was the team MVP in 1993, the offensive MVP in 1994 and the defensive MVP in 1995. As a junior in 1994 he was an all Great Lakes Regional selection and twice was the “Player of the Week”. During his senior season he was named an NSCAA/Umbro All-Midwest selection. Twice he served as team captain.
In April of 2004 he joined a select group of coaches who have earned the National “A” Coaching License from the United States Soccer Federation Coaching School when he passed the course in Carson, California. Only 1,500 coaches nationwide have earned an “A” license, including just 33 in Illinois and 10 in Iowa. He received his National “B” License in 2000 after gaining his “C” License in 1998.
Scott and his wife Jennifer are the parents of two boys, Dylan (February 2004) and Braeden (August 2006) and the family resides in Davenport, Iowa.
