2009 Season - Late night results in split with North Park
CHICAGO, Ill. - Senior Kevin Dencker (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) tossed a seven hit shutout in the second game of a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header with North Park on Tuesday evening in Chicago, Illinois. Dencker's game helped lift Augustana to a 6-0 victory in the nightcap and salvage a split on the night. North Park won the first game 4-3 in 10 innings.
Thanks in large part to Dencker's performance the Vikings were able to snap a six game losing streak. Augustana is now 22-13 overall and 9-8 in CCIW play.
GAME 1 - North Park 4, Augustana 3 (10 innings)
Andy Athans lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning that was deep enough to score Trevor Popp with the winning run as North Park defeated Augustana 4-3 in the first game of a CCIW double header. The score was tied 3-3 heading into the 10th when Popp led off with a triple down the right field line of Vikings starter Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.). Erickson hit the next two batters to load the bases before Athans delivered his game-winning sacrifice fly. Erickson struck out six and gave up seven hits as his record fell to 4-4.
North Park took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning but the Vikings took a 2-1 lead on Eric Izzo's (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) two run home run in the top of the third. In the top of the eighth Augustana pushed the lead to 3-1 when Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) doubled in John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), who had reached on an error.
In the bottom of the eighth North Park tied the game with a pair of runs.
Augustana only managed seven hits off starter Joel Bonnett, who worked 9 2/3 innings and Mike Giovenco, who worked a third of an inning. Hopson had two hits.
GAME 2 - Augustana 6, North Park 0
Kevin Dencker (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) went the distance, scattering seven hits while striking out eight and walking two. He moved to 2-0 on the season.
Augustana put five runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning on just two hits. The Vikings were helped by three walks, two wild pitches and a North Park error. Dave Hoffman's (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) double to score Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) started the uprising.
Kurnick walked to lead off the inning and Hoffman doubled him in for the first run of the game. John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to plate Hoffman. Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) walked to push Wagle to second. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base. After a ground out that did not advance either runner, Mike Trotta (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) reached on an error and Wagle scored the third run of the inning. John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) walked to load the bases. The second wild pitch of the inning allowed Izzo to score and T.J. O'Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Trotta.
The final run of the game came in the top of the ninth when Vezzetti singled with two outs. He stole second and came home on O'Donnell's single.
