2009 Season - Christensen, 1600 relay team qualify for NCAAs

Earlier this week the Augustana Vikings moved into the number one spot in the NCAA Division III men’s track & field national rankings. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team jumped from the fourth position to first. Over the past weekend the Vikings added two more events to a growing list of NCAA Division III national meet qualifiers.

Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) met the national qualifying standard in the discus when he recorded a throw of 158’ 4” at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday, April 25. That toss earned him a third place finish in the meet.

The other national qualifier came at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa where the 1600 meter relay team of Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) ran 3:16.56. That was good enough for a ninth place finish.

Augustana did have another top-ten finish at Drake and that came in the sprint medley where the team of Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Wood, Ekberg and Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) placed 10th in 3:31.36.

Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was third in the long jump at the Loras Open with a leap of 20’ 8 ½”.
