2009 Season - Vikings stay in top 10 in NCAA Division III women's poll

The Augustana Vikings stayed in the top 10 in the second NCAA Division III women’s track & field poll of the season. Veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team was ranked fifth a week ago and is now in seventh in the poll, which is conducted the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. Last week the Vikings had 163.17 points and this week they moved up to 172.14 points.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh is currently leading the nation with 186.72 points while Wisconsin-LaCrosse is second with 185.51. St. Thomas is third at 184.58 while Washington (175.30) and Illinois Wesleyan (175.10) round out the top five. Wartburg is just ahead of the Vikings with 172.82 points and Augustana’s seventh place total of 172.14 is just ahead of Tufts (171.99) in eighth. North Central is in ninth with 171.79 and Central of Iowa holds down the 10 th spot with 165.65.

So far this year Augustana has won three invitationals. The Vikings took the Early Spring Opener on March 21, the Viking Olympics on March 30 and the Augustana Invitational on April 17. They were fourth of 17 teams at the Central of Iowa Invitational and they were third of 10 at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays. In both the Central Invitational and the Calhoun Relays, Augustana was the first NCAA Division III team in the standings.
