2009 Season - Men's track & field team is ranked number one in NCAA Division III

After being ranked fourth in the first NCAA Division III men’s track & field outdoor poll, the Augustana Vikings made a big jump over the weekend and have taken over the top spot. The ranking is compiled by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. The Vikings of veteran head coach Paul Olsen finished the 2008 season ranked number one in the nation and were seventh in the 2009 indoor campaign.

Last week Augustana had 190.90 points and were third behind Claremont-McKenna-Harvey-Mudd-Scripps (206.11), Willamette (198.60) and North Central (196.71). This week the Vikings accumulated 211.03 points with CMHMS in second (206.71), Wisconsin-Oshkosh in third (205.50) and North Central in fourth (204.47). Wisconsin-Whitewater is in the fifth spot with 203.66 points.

So far this season the Vikings have championships at the Early Spring Opener (March 21), Viking Olympics (March 30) and Wartburg Select (April 4). They were fifth at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays on April 11 but Augustana was the lone NCAA Division III school in the 10 team field. Last weekend, at the Meet of Champions, the Vikings were second behind Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
