2009 Season - Vikings drop 9-7 decision to Benedictine in baseball

MOLINE, Illinois – Benedictine scored seven runs in the final two innings to take a 9-7 decision in a non-conference game with the Vikings on Wednesday, April 22 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.

Augustana led 5-2 after seven innings when the Eagles scored three runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to tie the game The Vikings answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth when Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) doubled to right center with two outs to drive in Don Hansen (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.).
With a 7-5 lead heading into the ninth Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.) got the first two Benedictine batters out. Six hits later the Eagles had four runs on the board and had taken a 9-7 lead.

Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) started for Augustana and worked the first five innings and gave up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

The Vikings broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ramos singled to right field to lead off the inning and after one out Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) doubled to right field with Ramos stopping at third. Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) was walked intentionally to load the bases. Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Hoffman at second but allowing Ramos to score and Izzo to move to third. A balk scored Izzo and moved Hoffman to second. Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) singled to center to score Hopson with the third run of the inning.

Ramos had three hits while Hansen and Izzo had two apiece.

Augustana is now 21-11 overall while Benedictine moved to 14-15.
