2009 Season - Vikings pound out 24 hits in softball sweep of Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Illinois – Obviously the windy can cold conditions at Bobby Wold Memorial Field in Monmouth, Illinois did not affect the offensive production of the Augustana Vikings on Tuesday, April 21. Head coach Kris Kistler’s team smacked the ball all over the diamond en route to a double header sweep on Monmouth in non-conference action.
Augustana won the first game 8-0 in just five innings and took the second game 10-2 in six innings as both contests were shortened due to the eight run rule. In game on the Vikings pounded out 11 hits and in game two they collected 13 hits.
With the twin wins Augustana moved to 24-8 overall and have now six of their last eight games. Monmouth fell to 15-15 overall.
GAME 1 – Augustana 8, Monmouth 0
Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) and Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) combined for a two hitter as the Vikings won 8-0 in the first game of a double header. Gill went the first four innings and struck out one while issuing three walks and allowing two hits. She moved her record to 10-5 on the year. Aten came on in the bottom of the fifth and did not allow a hit while striking out two.
The Augustana offense did not produce a single extra base hit as all 11 hits were singles. The Vikings scored in their first at-bat as Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) started things off with a single. She went to second on a sacrifice and third on a passed ball. She scored on a ground out off the bat of Karlee Quaritsch.
That would be the only run Gill and Aten would need but in the top of the third the Blue & Gold struck for four runs. Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) drew a walk to lead off and promptly stole second. She stole third as well. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) singled to drive in Kernich and move Snoreck to second. Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to load the bases. A single by Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) drove in Sarb and Snoreck and left Trojanowski at third and Walker moved to second on the throw to the plate. Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled to bring home Sarb with the fourth run of the inning.
The Vikings picked up two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it 8-0 and Aten’s relief work allowed the game to end early. Walker had three hits to lead the Augustana offense while Rosin had two.
GAME 2 – Augustana 10, Monmouth 2
Once again the Vikings were able to shorten the game, pushing across three runs in the top of the sixth to make it 10-2. In the first game Augustana had 11 hits and not a single one was of the extra base variety. In this contest, however, the Vikings had six doubles, including two each by Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.).
After two scoreless innings, Augustana finally broke through in the top of the third off Fighting Scot starter Amanda Murdock. Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) reached on an error to lead things off and then she stole second and third. Rosin’s first double of the game brought Fobert home to break the 0-0 tie. Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) sacrificed Rosin to third. Quaritsch’s grounder was misplayed, allowing Rosin to score and Quaritsch to end up on second base. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) doubled home Quaritsch and Stephanie Sarb’s (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) single plated Snoreck.
In the fourth Fobert singled and Rosin doubled her home. Rosin stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Kernich. Quaritsch singled, stole second and eventually third. Snoreck walked and Sarb’s double brought home Quaritsch.
In the sixth the Vikings bunched four hits with Jen Sloboda’s (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) two RBI single providing the big blow in the inning.
Quaritsch led the way for Augustana with three hits and she scored three runs. Rosin, Snoreck and Sarb all had two hits.
Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) worked the first three innings and had fourth strikeouts and did not allow a run. She picked up the win to move to 10-2 on the year. Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) came on in the fourth and pitched the final three innings and struck out five.
