2009 Season - Vikings dedicate Paul V. Olsen Track with second place finish at Meet of Champions

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – On the day that the new, nine-lane track was dedicated and renamed in honor of long-time head coach Paul Olsen, his team put on quite a performance at the Meet of Champions. The fourth ranked Augustana Vikings placed an impressive second place in the 13-team event on Saturday, April 18. Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the meet with 213.50 points while Augustana took second with 195. Fifth ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater took third with 159.50 with Monmouth in fourth with 118. Wisconsin-Platteville (92.50), Carthage (63), St. Ambrose (48), Luther (46.50), Wartburg (10), Bethel (6), Ashford (5), St. Olaf (4) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2) rounded out the field.

Four Vikings won individual titles on the day. Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) took first in the 400 with a time of :48.84. Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) grabbed the 1500 in 3:58.00 while Andy Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) scored a win in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:19.5. Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) captured the high jump with a leap of 6’ 8”.

The 1600 relay was second in 3:18.2 and the 3200 relay placed second in 8:02.78. Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 46’ 4”. Zeunik was also third in the long jump with a mark of 21’ 5 ¼”. Matt Fulton (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) finished third in the 1500 in 4:01.90 and teammate Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) was right behind him in fourth with a time of 4:01.90. Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) took third in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:32.2 and Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) was third in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :55.71. Davis was also fifth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :15.37. Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) tossed the javelin 177’ 5” and was third.

Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) ran :22.53 in the 200 to place fourth. Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) ripped off a throw of 154’ 9” to take fourth in the discus and Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) nailed a mark of 168’ 7” in the hammer for a fourth place finish.

Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) ran 15:37.48 and finished fifth in the 5000. Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) tossed the discus 145’ 1” to take fifth with Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) getting fifth in the shot at 47’ 5 ¼”. Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 166’ 5”. The 400 relay team took fifth in :43.30.

James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) finished sixth in the 400 (:49.64) and Zac Cupples (Ottawa Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.) was sixth in the 1500 (4:03.16). Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 14’ 7 ¼” for a sixth place finish in the pole vault and Andrew Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) was seventh in the same event, also with a height of 14’ 7 ¼”. Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished sixth in the triple jump (43’ 7”) and seventh in the long jump (20’ 5 ¾”). Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) ran :56.98 to take seventh in the 400 hurdles. Markbryan Baron (Plainfield Central HS, Lockport, Ill.) cleared 6’ 0 ¾” to take eighth in the high jump. Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) was eighth in the 5000 in 15:58.33 and Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) finished eighth in the 10,000 in 31:05.83.
