2009 Season - Vikings take two from Wheaton in CCIW softball
A switch in game times didn’t affect the Augustana Vikings at all in a double header sweep of Wheaton in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball action. Augustana beat the Thunder 4-2 in game one and then took the nightcap 10-0.
Because of the threat of rain the double header was moved up three hours to a 10:00 a.m. start.
The Vikings are now 22-8 overall and 6-2 in the CCIW. Wheaton fell to 10-18 and 0-8.
GAME 1 – Augustana 4, Wheaton 2
The Vikings took advantage of a pair of Wheaton errors en route to a 4-2 victory over the Thunder in the first game of a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header on Saturday, April 18 at Carver Field.
Wheaton jumped on top with an unearned run in the second inning when Kay Oliver scored on an error to make it 1-0. Augustana tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Jen Sloboda (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) led off with a single and scored on a double by Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.).
A Wheaton error in the fourth helped lead to a pair of unearned runs by the Vikings. Sloboda reached first on that error to lead off the inning. She stole second and sdvanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Trojanowski. Sloboda scored on a single to left by Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.). After the second out of the inning Nelson came home on a triple down the left field line off the bat of Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.).
The Thunder closed the gap to 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth but a two out single by Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) drove home Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) in the bottom of the sixth.
Augustana managed 11 hits off Wheaton hurler Ainsley McCullough. Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) went the distance for the Vikings and allowed six hits while striking out three. She is now 9-5 on the season.
GAME 2 – Augustana 10, Wheaton 0
The bottom of the batting order came up big for the Vikings in a 10-0 defeat of Wheaton in the second game of the double header. Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.), Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) occupy spots seven through nine in the order. They were a combined six for 11 with four runs scored and six runs-batted-in in the win. Walker and Nelson also added doubles to the cause and Walker stole a base.
Augustana broke the game open in the top of the second with five runs and then scored five more in the top of the seventh to cement the victory. Nelson led the way with three hits while Walker, Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.), Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) all had two hits.
Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) went the distance and allowed just four hits while striking out five. She is now 9-2 on the season.
