2009 Season - Women ranked fifth in NCAA Division III
The first poll of the 2009 outdoor season has Augustana ranked fifth in NCAA Division III. The poll is conducted the the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. Veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team amassed 163.17 points to settle into the fifth position.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse is ranked first with 177.60 points while Washington is second with 175.30. Illinois Wesleyan is third (165.91) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh is fourth (164.34) and then the Vikings are in fifth with 163.17. Claremont-McKenna-Harvey-Mudd-Scripps is sixth with 161.97 and North Central is seventh with 161.62. Tufts (159.60), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (157.17) and Emory (155.07) round out the top 10.
So far this year Augustana has won two invitationals. The Vikings took the Early Spring Opener on March 21 and the Viking Olympics on March 30. They were fourth of 17 teams at the Central of Iowa Invitvational and they were third of 10 at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays. In both the Central Invitational and the Calhoun Relays, Augustana was the first NCAA Division III team in the standings.
