2009 Season - Vikings drop two in softball to fifth ranked Central of Iowa on the road

PELLA, Iowa – The Augustana softball team dropped a pair of one run decisions to fifth ranked Central of Iowa in non-conference action on Thursday, April 16 in Pella, Iowa. The Vikings lost to the Dutch 5-4 in the first game and fell 3-2 on a seventh inning home run in game two.

Augustana played errorless ball in the twin-bill and three Viking pitchers allowed a total of just 11 hits in 14 innings. With the losses, Augustana falls to 20-8 overall while Central, ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division III poll, is now 28-4.

GAME 1 – Central 5, Augustana 4
Central jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings before Augustana mounted a comeback with three runs in the top of the fifth to trim the margin to 5-3. The Vikings scored a single run in the seventh to make it 5-4 but Dutch reliever Megan Swingen came into the game with the tying run on first and got a strike out to end the game.

Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) gave up single runs in the second and third innings and then gave up a three run home run to pinch hitter Trysha Shimak in the fourth. Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) came on in relief of Gill and she worked the final two innings without allowing a run or a hit.

Augustana got back into it in the top of the fifth with three runs. With one out Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to left field and Chrissy Rosin followed with an infield hit to move Fobert to second. Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) beat out a bunt to load the bases. Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) drove in Fobert with an infield out to make it 5-1. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) doubled to right center to bring home Kernich and Rosin to cut the lead to 5-3.

In the top of the seventh Fobert doubled to lead things off and Rosen hit a double down the left field line to drive in Fobert. After a foul out, Rosin was cut down at second. Quaritsch singled to keep the game alive but Swingen came in and struck out Snoreck for the third and final out.

Rosin and Fobert each had two hits to lead an Augustana attack that managed nine hits off Central starter Kiley Lythberg.

GAME 2 – Central 3, Augustana 2
Rachel Everingham hit a one out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Dutch a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the Vikings in the second game. The score was tied 2-2 when Everingham delivered off Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.). Ritzheimer worked 6 1/3 innings and had eight strikeouts and gave up just four hits while falling to 8-2 on the season.

Central scored first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning but the Vikings bounced back with two in the top of the second. Brittney Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) reached on an error and went to second on a passed ball. Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) singled to left field to score Snoreck. Jamie Bauerlein (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) pinch ran for Sarb and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Augustana a 2-1 lead.

The Dutch tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and won it in the seventh on Everingham’s homer.
