2009 Season - Vikings drop 12-10 decision to Concordia despite scoring eight runs in first inning

MOLINE, Illinois – An eight run first inning and six errors by the opponent was still not enough as Augustana dropped a 12-10 decision to Concordia in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday, April 14 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. This was a make-up of a game that was originally scheduled to be played on Monday, April 13 but was postponed due to rain.

A wild first inning, which took nearly an hour to complete, had the Vikings ahead 8-4, thanks to six hits and five Concordia errors. After that first inning, however, Augustana struggled to generate any offense against Cougar reliever A.J. Anderson.

Concordia scored four runs in the top of the first inning, knocking out Viking starter Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) after just six batters.

In the bottom of the first the Augustana offense went to work and the Concordia defense helped by committing five errors to go along with six hits by the Blue & Gold. The result was a barrage of unearned runs, eight in all and a quick exit by starter Anthony Collaro. Don Hansen (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) doubled home two runs and Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) singled in a pair for the big hits in the inning.

The Cougars tied the game with four runs in the top of the second to make it 8-8. Augustana came up with a single run in the bottom of the third when John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) led off with a walk, stole second and came home on a single off the bat of Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.). That is all the offense the Vikings could generate off Anderson, who was in the process of working 7 2/3 innings. He allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out three.

Meanwhile, Concordia put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth off reliever Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.), who actually pitched fairly well. Martin worked five innings and gave up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts but was hung with the loss.

Concordia added one more run in the top of the eighth to take a 12-9 lead into the ninth. The Vikings pushed across one run in the bottom of the ninth but Micah Buss came on with two outs and runners on first and second to record a strikeout for the final out.

Vezzetti, Ramos and Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) each had two hits to lead Augustana’s 10 hit attack. The Vikings committed three errors themselves in the field as the game featured nine errors, 12 walks, two hit-batsmen, a wild pitch and a passed ball.

Augustana is now 21-8 on the season while Concordia moved to 16-10.
