2009 Season - McMillan qualifies for NCAAs in two events at Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays

MACOMB, Illinois – Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) won two individual events in national qualifying time as Augustana put on an impressive display at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Relays in Macomb, Illinois over the weekend of April 10-11. The Vikings were the lone NCAA Division III team in the 10 team field and they finished fifth with 115.50 points. There were six division one schools (Eastern Illinois, Iowa, Illinois State, Western Illinois, Chicago State and Bradley), two NAIA institutions (St. Ambrose and Ashford) and a junior college (Lincoln).

Being the only non-scholarship team at the meet certainly didn’t slow down the Augustana performances as veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s squad scored 115.50 points to place fifth. Eastern Illinois won the team title with 175 points while Iowa was second (165.5) and Illinois State (133) finished third. Western Illinois was just in front of Augustana in fourth with 130 points while Chicago State was way back in sixth with 26. Ashford (20), St. Ambrose (20), Bradley (4) and Lincoln (1) rounded out the field.

McMillan won both the 110 high hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles and qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet in the process. He clocked a time of :14.81 in the highs and ran :52.84 in the intermediates. He added a second place finish in the high jump when he cleared 6’ 2 ¾”. He was also involved in another national meet qualifying event as the 1600 relay team placed third with a time of 3:17.66. Joining him on that relay were Evan Holschbach (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.), James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.).

The 800 relay team of Ekberg, Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Wood and Holschbach won with a time of 1:28.18.

Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) placed third in the 400 with a time of :49.65. Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) took fourth in the 800 in 1:56.89. Andy Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was fourth in the 3000 (8:57.40) and Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) was fourth in the 5000 (15:50.97). Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 14’ 1 ¼” to place fourth in the pole vault. The 3200 relay team of Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.), Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.), Matt Fulton (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) and Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) took fourth with a time of 8:08.8.

Ekberg finished fifth in the 800 in 1:57.27 and Brad Keating (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) took fifth in the 3000 in 9:04.42. Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) tossed the javelin 154’ 2” to take fifth and Andrew Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) and Ian Cox (Durand HS, Durand, Ill.) tied for fifth in the pole vault as each cleared 13’ 7 ¼”.

Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) took sixth in the 3000 (9:19.92) and Tom Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) was seventh (9:25.32). Kenny Slocum (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) placed sixth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:17.82. Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was sixth in the hammer with a toss of 152’ 7” and seventh in the shot put with a mark of 46’ 7 ½”. Tyler Vens (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took seventh at 141’ 3”. Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) finished seventh in the discus with a mark of 141’ 5” and Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) took eighth with a heave of 137’ 11”. Petersen was eighth in the 100 in :11.30. Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) finished eighth in the 1500 with a time 4:00.62 and Greg Davis placed eighth in the 110 high hurdles in :15.67.
