2009 Season - Baseball team completes three game sweep of Millikin series with 20-2 victory over Big Blue

MOLINE, Illinois – An offense that generated 18 hits and 20 runs and an outstanding pitching performance from Mike O’Neill (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Peoria, Ill.) combined to help Augustana to a 20-2 victory over Millikin on Saturday, April 11 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. With the win the Vikings completed a three game sweep of the Big Blue. Augustana won a double header on Friday, April 10 by scores of 11-4 and 17-1.

O’Neill allowed two runs in the bottom of the first inning but settled down after that and held the Big Blue scoreless the rest of the way. He worked the entire seven innings as the game was shortened due to the 10 run rule. O’Neill struck out six, walked three and scattered nine hits as he evened his record at 1-1 on the year.

The Vikings broke out with four runs in the top of the first inning, went scoreless in the second but came back with three runs in the third. After a scoreless fourth Augustana put up five runs each in the fifth and sixth and closed the game with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Every starter collected at least one hit with Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) all getting three hits. Ramos had two runs scored and three runs-batted-in while Schuetz and Kurnick each had two runs scored and two RBI. T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) and Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) both had two hits. Moran scored four runs from his leadoff position and had two RBI as well.

Augustana is now 21-7 overall and 8-4 in the CCIW while Millikin fell to 8-13 and 2-7.
