2009 Season - Vikings sweep Elmhurst in softball; Reach 20 wins for 10th straight year
ELMHURST, Illinois – In an impressive offensive display, Augustana moved its softball record to 20-6 with a double header sweep of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Elmhurst. The Vikings beat the Bluejays by scored of 13-8 and 10-2 on Friday, April 10 at Salt Creek Park in Elmhurst, Illinois. During the twin bill Augustana piled up 23 runs and 30 hits.
The Vikings are now 20-6 overall and 4-2 in the CCIW. Augustana has now won at least 20 games for 10 straight seasons, all under the direction of head coach Kris Kistler. Kistler arrived at Augustana prior to the 1999-00 school year and before that the Vikings had only compiled five 20 win seasons in school history. Since Kistler became the head coach the lowest number of wins has been 23 in 2001 (23-20).
GAME 1 – Augustana 13, Elmhurst 8
A quick start was the answer in game one as the Vikings scored all 13 runs in the first four innings of the contest and went on to win 13-8. They scored single runs in the first and second and then exploded for seven in the third and had four in the fourth.
Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) started and worked three innings and left with a 9-3 lead. She didn’t have a strikeout or a walk and allowed three runs on five hits. Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) came on and went the final four innings and gave up five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four base-on-balls. Gill was ineligible to get the win because she did not work the required four innings as a starter so Aten gets credit for the victory and is now 4-1 on the year.
The Vikings got on the board in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) reached on an error to lead off the game and she went to second on a passed ball. A ground out pushed her to third. After a second out, Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch and then Snoreck and Rosin pulled off a double steal with Rosin scoring the game’s first run.
Another steal of home accounted for the second run. In the second inning Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) led off with a single to center field. She went to second and third on ground outs. With two outs Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) coaxed a walk and then Fobert and Trojanowski executed a double steal.
The game broke wide open in the third when Augustana exploded for seven runs on six hits with one Elmhurst error in the mix. Rosin’s double with the bases loaded drove in three runs and proved to be the big blow in the frame.
Elmhurst showed some power in the third with two home runs as the Bluejays scored three to cut the lead to 9-3. The Vikings answered with four in the top of the fourth on three hits. Fobert’s two run double scored Trojanowski and Ashley Mulligan (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.). Fobert scored on a ground out by Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) and the Vikings got their fourth run on another steal of home. Rosin was on third after singling and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) was on first after being hit by a pitch. With two outs they pulled off another double steal to account for Augustana’s 13th, and final, run of the game.
Trojanowski had four hits with two runs scored while Rosin, Quaritsch, Snoreck and Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) all had two hits. Rosin scored three runs and had three runs-batted-in from her leadoff position.
GAME 2 – Augustana 10, Elmhurst 2
Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) moved her record to 8-1 on the season as she tossed a four hitter in a 10-2 win over Elmhurst to secure the double header sweep. She struck out four and walked four but got plenty of help from her teammates. The Vikings collected 14 hits on offense and did not commit an error in the field.
Elmhurst broke on top with a run in the top of the first inning but Augustana answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) reached on a bunt single with one out. She stole second and advanced to third when Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) struck out but the ball got away from the catcher. Quaritsch was thrown out at first but Kernich made it to third on the play. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) delivered a clutch, two out single to score Kernich with the tying run. Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled Snoreck to second. Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to score Snoreck and when the throw home got away, Nelson came home as well.
In the second inning the Vikings added three more runs on three hits and two Elmhurst errors. Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled with one out and went to second on a single by Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.). Fobert and Rosin worked a double steal and Fobert scored when the throw got away and Rosin moved to third base. Kernich put down a bunt and beat it out for a hit and went all the way to second on the play as Rosin stayed at third. Quaritsch reached on an error with Kernich moving to second and Rosin scoring. Snoreck’s sacrifice fly to left field plated Kernich.
Snoreck’s double in the fourth brought home Quaritsch, who had singled. Fobert’s two run home run, her fourth of the season, in the fifth accounted for two runs. In the sixth Snoreck powered her third run of the campaign to finish the Viking scoring for the game.
Snoreck had three hits, scored a pair of runs and had four RBI in the game. Rosin, Kernich, Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) and Fobert all had two hits to help pace the Augustana attack.
