2009 Season - Vikings sweep Millikin for first two conference victories
DECATUR, Illinois – After dropping a pair of 3-2 heartbreakers in extra innings against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in Bloomington, Augustana got a much needed lift with a sweep over Millikin in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action. The Vikings defeated the Big Blue by scores of 11-2 and 3-2 and moved to 18-6 overall while Millikin fell to 10-14.
Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) got the win in the first game and moved to 8-4 on the year. Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) came on in relief in the second game and picked up the victory to run her record to 3-1.
Augustana did not commit an error in either game.
GAME 1 – Augustana 11, Millikin 3
With the game tied 2-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning, Augustana broke loose with nine runs in the top of the frame en route to an 11-2 win. The game was halted after five innings due to the eight run rule.
Gill struck out three and walked just two while scattering five hits to pick up the victory.
Augustana banged out 11 hits with Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) leading the way with three hits, two runs scored and five runs-batted-in. She also hit her third home run of the season and had a double as well. Her home run was a grand slam in the nine run fifth.
Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Jen Sloboda (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) each had two hits. One of Trojanowski’s hits was a triple.
The Vikings played error-less ball while Millikin committed a pair of errors.
GAME 2 – Augustana 3, Millikin 2
The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory in the second game of the double header. Augustana trailed 2-1 heading into the last inning before coming up with the tying and winning runs.
Aten worked the final two innings to get credit for the victory. She allowed three hits and struck out one. Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) worked the first five innings and gave up two runs on three hits. She walked seven and struck out nine.
Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) each had two hits. Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) drove in a pair of runs.
The winning rally started in the bottom of the seventh with two outs when Sarb singled. She gave way to pinch runner Jamie Bauerlein (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.). Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) reached on an error to keep the inning alive and Bauerlein moved to second base. Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to score Bauerlein with the tying run. Walker moved to third and Fobert went to second on the throw to the plate. Rosin ended the game with a single to drive in Walker with the winning run.
