2009 Season - Elmhurst beats Augustana 6-4 in CCIW baseball action
ELMHURST, Illinois – Despite 12 hits, Augustana dropped a 6-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin baseball contest at Elmhurst on Wednesday, April 8. The game, played at Butterfield Park, was quite a turnaround from last week when the Vikings swept a double header from the Bluejays by a combined score of 37-6.
Elmhurst jumped on Augustana starter Kyle Murphy (Lane Tech HS, Chicago, Ill.) with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Bluejays added a single run in the third to take a 4-0 lead before the Vikings pushed a single run across in the top of the fourth. Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a double by Ken Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.). Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) was hit as well to bring home Hoffman. That was the only run for Augustana in the inning as the Vikings left the bases loaded. In the game they would leave a total of 14 runners on base.
Elmhurst scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch the lead to 6-1. The Vikings got three runs back in the top of the fifth. John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to lead things off, stole second and scored on a double by Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.). A ground out advanced Izzo to third and after another ground ball out, Kurnick singled to left center to score Izzo. Kurnick stole second and eventually scored on a single by Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.).
That would all the scoring in the game, however as Augustana left two runners on in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings.
Schuetz had three hits while Hoffman and Moran each had two for the Vikings.
