2009 Season - Vikings beat Loras 7-3 in baseball behind complete game performance from Grant Loiselle
MOLINE, Illinois – Sophomore lefthander Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) tossed a complete game as Augustana defeated Loras 7-3 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Loiselle struck out 10 and walked just two while scattering seven hits as he moved his record to 3-0 on the season.
The Vikings jumped in front 1-0 with a single run in the bottom of the third. Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.), who would end up the day three for three, doubled with one out. He scored on a double down the right field line by Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.).
Loras came back with two runs in the top of the fourth, helped along by an Augustana error. Loiselle struck out Travis Olson with runners on second and third to get out of the jam after a pair of runs had already scored.
Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) homered to lead off the bottom of the fourth to tie things at 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth the Vikings scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the seventh Moran singled, went to second on a ground out and came home on a single off the bat of Don Hansen (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.). Augustana added two more in the bottom of the eighth. Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) doubled home Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) singled in Schuetz.
Loiselle gave up a lead off home run to Austin Brown but retired the next three batters to secure the victory. He breezed through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings without allowing a hit as he went the distance for the third time this season.
The Vikings pounded out 12 hits against four Loras pitchers with Moran leading the way with three, while scoring three runs and collecting a walk. Ramos and Schuetz each had two hits in the game.
Augustana is now 18-6 overall while Loras fell to 13-10. It was the 11th straight victory for the Vikings in this series, which they lead 31-13 all-time.
