2009 Season - McMillan and Stake qualify for NCAA's as Vikings score impressive win at Wartburg Select Invitational in men's track & field
WAVERLY, Iowa – Despite terrible weather conditions in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, April 4, the Augustana men’s track & field team put on an incredible performance. The Vikings won six events, had two national meet qualifiers and ran away from a good field at the Wartburg Select Invitational at Walston-Hoover Stadium. Augustana scored 173.75 points, to defeat runner-up Wisconsin-LaCrosse by nearly 40 points. St. Thomas was third with 130.25 with Wisconsin-Platteville taking fourth with 98 and Warburg grabbing fifth with 85.50. Simpson (77) and Loras (66) rounded out the seven team field.
Senior Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) and sophomore Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) both met NCAA Division III qualifying marks in their respective events. McMillan actually won a pair of races on the cold and blustery day. He won the 110 high hurdles in :14.98 and the 400 intermediate hurdles in a national qualifying time of :54.07. Stake won the decathlon with a national qualifying total of 6,099 points.
Senior Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) won the 400 in :49.06. Sophomore Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took first in the triple jump in 44’ 4 ¼” and junior Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) won the javelin with a toss of 186’ 6”.
Ekberg ran the anchor on two relays that placed second. In the 400 he combined with junior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), sophomore James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and senior Evan Holschbach (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.) to bring home a second place finish in :42.61. The 1600 relay of Holschbach, freshman Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), Wood and Ekberg placed second in 3:19.39.
Holschbach was second n the 200 in :22.15 and Petersen took fifth in :22.43. Wood placed third in the 400 with a time of :49.57 and Davis was fifth in both the 110 high hurdles (:15.62) and 400 intermediate hurdles (:57.21).
Junior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) finished second in the 5000 in 15:08.58 and freshman Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) was second in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:51.29.
Freshman Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) tossed the shot 47’ 2 ¼” to take third and junior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was third in the hammer with a throw of 161’ 11”. Senior Steve Sulfridge (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) took fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 14’ 5 ¼”.
Junior Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was fifth in the javelin (155’ 3”) and seventh in the long jump (19’ 9 ½”). The Vikings took three spots in the 800 with Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) and Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.). Weigand was sixth (1:59.61), Tisza took seventh (1:59.66) and Langslet eighth (2:00.01). Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) placed seventh in the 1500 in 4:06.69. The 5000 saw Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) place seventh in 15:39.52 and Tom Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) grab eighth in 15:47.87.
