2009 Season - Vikings split CCIW double header with Wheaton behind complete game performance from Mike Trotta
MOLINE, Illinois – Freshman Mike Trotta (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) came up with a huge pitching performance in game two of a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header with Wheaton on Saturday, April 4 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Trotta went the distance (eight innings) as Augustana defeated the Thunder 10-0 in the night cap after dropping a 13-7 decision in the first game. Wheaton won the first two games of the series so Trotta’s gem was much needed for Greg Wallace’s Vikings.
Augustana is now 17-6 overall and 5-3 in the CCIW while Wheaton is 11-12 and 4-4.
GAME 1 – Wheaton 13, Augustana 7
The Vikings led 4-0 and 6-3 early in this contest but Wheaton tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth and took the lead with two in the sixth to take the lead. The Thunder sealed the victory with five runs in the top of the ninth.
Josh Fallon, who was on the ropes early, went eight innings and did not allow a run after the third inning as he evened his record at 1-1 for Wheaton. The Thunder battered seven Augustana pitchers for 17 hits and the Vikings didn’t help matters with three errors.
Augustana jumped in front 3-0 after one inning as three hits, a walk and two hit batters led to three runs. An RBI single by John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) made it 4-0 after two innings. Wheaton scored three in the top of the third to trim the margin to 4-3 but the Vikings got a two run home run from Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) in the bottom of the third to go up 6-3.
From that point on, however, the game belonged to Wheaton. The top of the Thunder batting order (spots one through four) went a combined 11 for 18 with eight runs scored, eight RBI and three base-on-balls.
Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) had three hits with Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and Wagle each getting two for the Vikings.
GAME 2 – Augustana 10, Wheaton 0
Mike Trotta (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) had complete command on the mound, tossing a four hitter as Augustana defeated Wheaton 10-0 in the second game of a CCIW double header. Trotta, who only had three varsity innings heading into the contest, struck out seven and walked four as he went eight innings.
He pitched with a narrow lead most of the game until the Vikings broke things open with six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Heading into the bottom of the third the game was scoreless when Joe Moran (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) led off with a single to left field. He went to second and third on ground outs and scored on a single to right by John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.).
In the bottom of the fifth Dave Hoffman’s (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) two out single drove in a pair of runs to make it 3-0. The game broke open in the bottom of the seventh with six runs on four hits and two errors.
Wagle, Hoffman and Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) all had three hits while Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and Moran each had two. The Vikings had 17 hits in the game.
