2009 Season - Wheaton beats Vikings in first game of weekend series 9-6
SCHAUMBURG, Illinois – Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the seventh to lead the way in a 9-6 victory over the Vikings on Friday, afternoon at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Illinois. This was the first game of a three game series between the two teams.
The game was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Thunder scored three runs on just one hit with the help of an Augustana error. In the fifth a three run home run off the bat of Steve Dennison was the big blow in a four run Wheaton uprising.
The Vikings only managed six hits off Wheaton’s Tim Urbanowicz, who went the distance and struck out five with six base-on-balls. John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had two hits and John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) picked up three runs-batted-in. Vezzetti’s bases loaded double in the top of the sixth scored three runs and tied the game 5-5 at the time.
Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) took the loss for the Vikings and fell to 3-2 on the season. Augustana is now 16-5 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while Wheaton moves to 11-12 and 3-3.
