2009 Season - Complete game performances from Grant Loiselle and Kyle Murphy key baseball sweep of Elmhurst
MOLINE, Illinois – Getting the most out of two complete game pitching performances and an explosive offensive performance, Augustana picked up its second straight double header sweep in as many days. The Vikings beat Elmhurst by scores of 17-2 and 20-4 just one day after taking a pair of games from North Central by counts of 14-7 and 3-1. Both of the double headers were played under less than desirable conditions at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Augustana moved its overall record to 16-4 and its College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin mark to 4-1 while Elmhurst fell to 8-8 and 0-5.
Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) went the distance in game one while Kyle Murphy (Lane Tech HS, Chicago, Ill.) tossed a complete game in the nightcap. Loiselle is now 2-0 on the season while Murphy moved to 3-0.
GAME 1 – Augustana 17, Elmhurst 2
Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) went seven innings and scattered five hits to give the Augustana pitching staff a much needed boost in a 17-2 victory over the Bluejays in the first game of a CCIW double header. After playing three conference games in the previous three days, the Vikings went into the twin bill a little tired in the pitching department. Loiselle struck out seven and walked just two and was in command the whole way. He fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but the Augustana bats responded in a big way and Elmhurst committed seven errors in the first four innings.
The Vikings put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning and both were unearned. In the second they broke it wide open with nine runs on just five hits but the Bluejays committed two errors. Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) led off with a home run to left center and by the time the damage stopped 13 Vikings batted. Schuetz also had a double in the inning and Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) contributed a pair of runs-batted-in with a single. Three walks didn’t hurt either.
Augustana got two more in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth before the game was stopped after the top of the seventh due to the 10 run rule. Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) hit a two run home run in the sixth to end the scoring. The Vikings pounded a pair of Elmhurst pitchers for 10 hits with Schuetz and Ramos getting two each. Schuetz scored four runs during the contest. Hoffman collected four RBI and Ramos drove in three runs.
GAME 2 – Augustana 20, Elmhurst 4
Kyle Murphy (Lane Tech HS, Chicago, Ill.) followed up Loiselle’s complete game with one of his own as the Vikings completed the sweep of the double header with a 20-4 win over Elmhurst. Murphy worked seven innings and scattered 11 hits while striking out seven and walking just one. He was the benefactor of an Augustana offense that pounded out 18 hits, seven of them of the extra base variety.
The Vikings put four runs up in the bottom of the second and Murphy survived a two run Bluejay third. Augustana then scored two in the third, two more in the fourth, four in the fifth and dropped eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) ripped a grand slam home run in the fifth and Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) hit a two run blast, his fourth of the year, in the third.
Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) went four for four with four runs scored and two RBI to help lead the offensive attack. Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) had three hits while Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and Michael Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) all had two hits in the game. Hopson, Schuetz and O’Donnell all scored three runs.
