2009 Season - Vikings can't hold lead in CCIW baseball opener
NAPERVILLE, Illinois – Despite jumping out to an early 5-1 lead, the Augustana Vikings fell to North Central by a score of 7-6 on Saturday, March 28 in Naperville, Illinois. The game was the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for both teams.
Augustana scored three runs in the top of the second and added two more in the top of the third to go ahead 5-1. North Central got back into it with two runs in the bottom of the third and then took the lead 6-5 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth off Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.). The Vikings tied it with a single run in the top of the eighth before the Cardinals carved out a run in the bottom of the eighth off Jon Carlson (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) .
Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) all had three hits for Augustana and John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) had a pair of runs-batted-in.
The Vikings are now 12-4 overall while North Central is 2-7.
