2009 Season - Vikings go to 14-4 in softball with 4-3 win over Ripon
MOLINE, Illinois – A combination of back to back home runs in the fifth inning and a sterling pitching performance from Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) helped lift Augustana to a 4-3 victory over Ripon in the second game of the Augustana Softball Invitational. Earlier in the day the Vikings dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Grinnell on a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.
This game was close as well but Augustana scored a run in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the winning margin. Ritzheimer went the distance and picked up the victory, her sixth of the season against just one defeat. She struck out 11 and gave up just six hits while pitching in miserable conditions.
Ripon took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Ashley Kirs led off with a single, stole second and came home on a single by pinch hitter Allie Jensen. Jensen scored on a two run home run to left off the bat of shortstop Natalie Geenen.
Down by three runs, the Vikings struck quickly in the bottom of the fifth, using the long ball. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) hit a two run home with Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.), who had walked, on board. Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) followed that with a solo home run to tie things at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) led off with a single. She went to second on a walk by Fobert and eventually scored the game winner on a sacrifice fly to center by Quaritsch.
Augustana is now 14-4 overall while Ripon falls to 5-6.
