2009 Season - Grinnell nips Augustana in opening round of Augustana Softball Invitational
MOLINE, Illinois – Kim Durinick delivered a one out single in the bottom of the third inning to bring home Brianna Gallo with the winning run as Grinnell defeated Augustana 4-3 in first round action of the Augustana Softball Invitational on Saturday, March 28. The tournament is being held at the Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline, Illinois.
Durnick’s hit hung the loss on Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.), who is now 7-3 on the year. Gill pitched well in a losing effort, giving up just six hits on a bitterly cold morning. She was not helped by three Augustana errors and three of the four runs scored against her were unearned.
Grinnell broke out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but Augustana tied the game in the top of the third when Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) singled home Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.). The Pioneers picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the third to go ahead 2-1.
In the top of the fourth it was Augustana’s turn to benefit from some sloppy fielding as two Grinnell errors contributed to a pair of Viking runs.
Grinnell tied the game in the top of the fifth on another unearned run and then won it in the bottom of the seventh. Augustana had nine hits in the game with Snoreck leading the way with three. Rosin and Melissa Nelson (Aurora West HS, Aurora, Ill.) each had two hits.
Augustana is now 13-4 on the season while Grinnell moves to 3-6.
