2009 Season - Erica Aten's pinch hit RBI single in seventh gives softball team a 2-1 win over Dubuque
ST. LOUIS, Missouri – Freshman Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) delivered a run scoring, pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh inning to help lift Augustana to a 2-1 victory over Dubuque. The victory came in the final round of the Washington Tournament on Sunday, March 22 in St. Louis, Missouri.
With the game tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) led off with a single. She went to second when Brittney Snoreck’s (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) sacrifice bunt attempt was mishandled for an error. Aten was then called on to pinch hit for Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and she smacked a single to right field that brought home Rosin with the winning run.
Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) went the distance for Augustana and picked up the win to move to 5-1 on the season. She struck out six and allowed just three hits while walking just one batter.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when a pair of Spartan errors put runners on first and second with nobody out. Nelson, who led off the inning by reaching on the first error, eventually scored on a single by Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.).
Dubuque tied the game in the top of the fourth when Rachel Gratz led off the inning with a home run off Ritzheimer.
Augustana collected eight hits off Dubuque pitcher Kristin Valant but no Viking had more than one hit.
The Vikings are now 11-3 on the season while Dubuque falls to 4-9.
