2009 Season - Greg Davis wins both hurdle events and men's track & field team cruises to easy win in Early Spring Opener

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – Freshman Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) won both hurdle events to lead Augustana to an easy team victory in the Early Spring Opener on Saturday, March 21 at Paul V. Olsen Track. The Vikings took 13 of the 20 events and placed in the top five in all but one as they scored a whopping 424 points to outdistance the seven team field. St. Ambrose was a distant second with 162 points while William Penn was third with 102. Mount Mercy (52) narrowly edged Ashford (51) for fourth with Wisconsin-Parkside (16) taking sixth and Loras (8) claiming seventh.

Running in unusually good weather for late March in the Midwest, Davis put on quite a show in his first ever outdoor collegiate meet. He won the 110 high hurdles in :15.44 and came back later to claim the 400 intermediate hurdles in a very fine time of :55.81. For good measure he added a leg in the 1600 relay which won with a time of 3:22.39. Joining him on that winning 1600 relay were Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Kris Hinchley (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.).

Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) and Evan Holschbach (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.) were double winners in the meet. Ekberg won the 200 in :22.59 while Holschbach took the 400 in :49.46. Both runners contributed legs on the winning 400 relay team which won in a fine time of :42.29. Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and Wood handled the other two legs on that relay.

Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) ran 9:57.4 to win the 3000 steeplechase and Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) churned out an 8:50.13 to pick up a victory in the open 3000. Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) won the 800 in 1:57.25.

The Vikings won four of the eight field events. Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) took first in the discus with a toss of 133’ 9” and Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) won the javelin with a mark of 171’ 4”. Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) recorded a leap of 21’ 2” to win the long jump and Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 13’ 9” to take the pole vault.

Petersen picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in addition to running a leg on the winning 400 relay. He was second in the 100 (:11.05) and the 200 :22.76. Somers placed second in the 400 in :49.54 and Hinchley was third in :51.42. Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) finished second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:09 with Lucas Westblade (Will Carleton Academy, Hillsdale, Mich.) third in 10:51.5 and Pat Fritsch (Fenton HS, Bensonville, Ill.) taking fourth in 10:57.4 as the Vikings swept the first four spots.

Augustana grabbed all five places in the 800 behind Weigand’s winning time of 1:57.00. Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) was second in 1:58.56, Adam Tisue (Sherrard HS, Milan, Ill.) took third in 2:00.98 with Jordan Brewner (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) placing fourth in 2:01.52 and Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.) nailing down fifth in 2:03.58.

Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) placed second in the 1500 in 4:06.34 and Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) took second in the open 3000 in 9:00.60. The 3200 relay team of Zac Cupples (Ottawa Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.), Andy Kupisch (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), TenBusch and Christian claimed the runner-up spot in 8:35.06. Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was second in the shot put with a toss of 46’ 8 ¾” and Ian Cox (Durand HS, Durand, Ill.) cleared 13’ 9” to take second in the pole vault.

In the 200 Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Ill.) was third (:23.05) and Wood was fourth (:23.31) as the Vikings took the first four places. Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) placed third in the javelin with a heave of 160’ 5” and also added a fourth place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 5’ 9 ¾”. He was fifth in the long jump (19’ 8 ¼”) as well. Mark Constantine (Waubonsie Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) had a mark of 42’ 11” that was good for third in the shot put and Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 19’ 11 ¾”. Markbryan Baron (Plainfield Central HS, Lockport, Ill.) was third in the high jump at 5’ 11 ½”. Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) ran :57.51 to finish third in the 400 hurdles. Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) had a busy day in the throwing events. He was third in the hammer with a toss of 154’ 2” and was fourth in the discus (131’ 11”) and shot (42’ 10 ¼”.

Cupples took fourth in the 1500 in 4:09.15 and Tom Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) placed fourth in the open 3000 with a time of 9:23.51. Andrew Sixta (West Des Moines Valley HS, West Des Moines, Iowa) finished fourth in the 110 high hurdles in :16.40. Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) and Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) tied for fourth in the pole vault as each cleared 13’ 2 ½”. Mike Pettis (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) finished fifth in the 110 high hurdles (:16.59) and Ryan Kelley (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 148’ 5”.
