2009 Season - Eight run third inning helps softball team beat Cornell 10-1
ST. LOUIS, Missouri – After dropping a tough 4-2 decision to Simpson in the opening round of the Washington Tournament, Augustana came back to beat Cornell in the second round by a score of 10-1. Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) and Rachel Perry (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) combined on a four hitter and the Vikings played errorless defense in the win.
Ritzheimer moved to 4-1 on the year as she started and worked the first four innings with four strikeouts while allowing only two hits. She was relieved by Perry, who went the final inning.
Augustana broke the game wide open with an eight run third inning. In the inning the Vikings collect five hits and were helped by two Ram errors. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) drove in the first three runs of the inning with a double with the bases loaded. The other big blow in the inning came when Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) doubled in a pair of teammates.
The Vikings picked up two runs in the top of the fifth and the game ended after five innings due to the eight run rule.
Augustana collected eight hits in the game and no Viking had more than one.
With the win the Vikings moved to 10-2 overall while Cornell fell to 4-6.
