2009 Season - Three run fourth inning spells doom in 4-2 softball loss to Simpson
ST. LOUIS, Missouri – A troublesome fourth inning proved to be the undoing for Augustana as the Vikings dropped a 4-2 decision to Simpson in the first round of the Washington Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri. The game was played at Maryville University’s field.
The game was tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Storm broke loose for three runs and that proved to be the difference. Simpson strung four hits together in the frame with a two RBI single off the bat of right fielder Jessica Barkley proving to be the big blow.
Augustana trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the second but tied the game. Dawn Kernich (Mount Olive HS, Mount Olive, Ill.) singled to lead off the inning, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) and went to third on a single by Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.). Kernich scored when Chrissy Rosin’s (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) ground ball was misplayed.
Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh the Vikings mounted a rally. With two outs Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) was hit by a pitch. Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled her to second. Brittany Snoreck’s (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) single brought home Quaritsch to make it 4-2 but Nelson was thrown out on the play to end the game.
Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) only allowed six hits but she took the loss, her first of the season against six victories. Whitney Oviatt worked 6 2/3 innings for Simpson and picked up the win, pushing her record to 13-2 on the year.
Snoreck and Fobert each had two hits to pace the Augustana attack.
Augustana is now 9-2 while Simpson moved to 15-6.
