2009 Season - Baseball team finishes second Florida trip with 13-9 win over Central of Iowa
FORT MYERS, Florida - The Augustana Vikings put the finishing touches on a successful, four game swing to Florida with a 13-9 victory over Central of Iowa on Sunday, March 15 at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Florida. With the win the Vikings wrapped up a 3-1 swing in a period of four days. Augustana defeated Carroll 16-5 on Thursday, March 12, lost to Babson 9-6 on Friday, March 13 and defeated Illinois College 14-5 on Saturday, March 14 before handling the Dutch today.
Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) turned in a solid performance as the starter, working eight innings and picking up the victory. He struck out nine while walking two as he moved his record to 2-1. He gave up three unearned runs in the second inning and was lifted in the ninth after tiring. Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) came in and worked the ninth.
Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) went four for four from his leadoff position and scored three runs to lead the offense. He got things started in the first inning with a single, went all the way to third on a throwing error on a botched pickoff move and came home on a booming triple by Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.). Hoffman scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) to make it 2-0. Eric Izzo followed Wagle’s RBI with a double and he came home on a single by Jack Lococo (Dundee Crown HS, Algonquin, Ill.).
The Vikings upped the ante to 7-0 in the second with four runs. A bases loaded double with two outs by Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) was the big blow and Hopson scored on Lococo’s single.
Central scored three unearned runs in the top of the third to make it 7-3 but the Viking offense answered with two runs in the third. In the fourth T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) hit a booming two run home run in a three run outburst.
Augustana pounded out 17 hits against a pair of Central pitchers. Ramos led the way with four hits while Lococo had three and O’Donnell and Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.) each had two. O’Donnell and Hopson each had three RBI.
