2009 Season - Walks and errors hurt Vikings in 9-6 baseball loss to Babson
FORT MYERS, Florida – Augustana dropped a 9-6 decision to Babson on Friday, March 13 at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Florida. The Vikings committed five errors, issued 11 walks and hit two batters in the game. Of the nine runs that Babson scored, just three were earned.
Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) took the loss after starting and working 4 2/3 innings. Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) each had two hits for the Vikings.
Babson took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning before Augustana tied the game in the top of the third. With one out Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) walked. He went to second on a passed ball, third on a stolen base and scored on a single by Ramos.
The Vikings upped the lead to 3-1 with two runs in the top of the fourth. Jack Lococo (Dundee Crown HS, Algonquin, Ill.) led things off with a single and he went to second on a sacrifice by Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.). He went to third on a wild pitch. T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) then struck out but the pitch got away from the catcher and O’Donnell reached first. Lamb hit a ground ball to shortstop that forced O’Donnell at second but scored Lococo. Lamb stole second and came home on a single to center field by Ramos.
It stayed 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Babson hit for three runs and then came right back in the bottom of the sixth and scored four more. The Vikings added a single run in the top of the sixth when they manufactured a score without the benefit of a hit. O’Donnell led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. He gave way to pinch runner Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.), who stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Don Hansen (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.).
Babson added a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-4 before Augustana closed the gap to 9-6 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Kurnick singled with one out and John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) drove him in with a ringing double to left field. Vezzetti scored on Lamb’s single.
Augustana is now 9-3 on the season.
