2008-09 Season - Augustana women's tennis team earns wins over Lebanon Valley and Catholic on spring trip to South Carolina

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Augustana women’s tennis team returned home from its annual spring trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with a record of 2-3.  The Vikings earned wins over Lebanon Valley and Adrian while dropping matches to East Stroudsburg, Methodist, and Adrian.  The women now have an overall mark of 9-11 with seven matches remaining on the spring schedule.

The Vikings opened play on Monday, March 2 against East Stroudsburg, an NCAA Division II school from Pennsylvania.  Although the team fell 8-1 in the morning match, juniors Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) paired together for an (8-4) victory at number two doubles against Sarah Deisher and Amanda Kaufman.  It was the first match of the season for Crawford who was studying abroad in Costa Rica during the fall tennis season.  Junior Rose Szczurek (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) turned in the best showing in singles, dropping a (7-6 (4), 6-3) decision to Angela Teri at sixth singles.

Augustana fell behind again in its afternoon match later that day against Lebanon Valley.  The two teams squared off in singles first and the Vikings trailed 4-2 heading into doubles play.  Junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) played a terrific match, defeating Jess Fentenda (6-0, 6-0) at fourth singles.  Szczurek also won her match (6-3, 6-4) over Morgan Brady in the fifth slot.  Sophomore Justine Stukas (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) came back from a one set deficit before falling to Tam Lobb (6-2, 2-6, (13-11)) at number six singles.

Needing to win all three doubles matches, the Vikings did just that to earn a 5-4 victory.  Crawford and Richardson were (8-4) winners over Sarah Grodzinski and Shayna Heitzelman at number one doubles and freshmen Julie Wach (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Alyssa Quitschau (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) won by an identical (8-4) score against Caitlin Bradford and Brady at the third spot.  With the match tied at 4-4, Doemland and sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) came through with a (9-8 (7-3)) win against Sammy Burkey and Lobb at number two doubles to grab the team victory.

The Blue & Gold faced another tough test on Tuesday, March 3 against Methodist, ranked #11 in the Atlantic South region.  The Vikings fell 8-1, but freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) battled for a tough win at sixth singles, outlasting Cameron Tinkham (6-3, 3-6, (10-7)) to give Augustana its only point of the day.  Richardson and Crawford also played well at number one doubles, fighting back from a 7-4 deficit before dropping a (9-7) decision to Kaitlin Flaherty and Shannon Vivion.

Augustana quickly rebounded on Wednesday, March 4 with a 6-3 victory against Catholic.  The Vikings won close matches at second and third doubles to gain a 2-1 edge heading into singles.  Sapio and Doemland earned the first point of the day with an (8-5) victory at second doubles over Mary Wargo and Seda Ambartsumian.  Wach and Quitschau teamed together for another win at third doubles, winning the final two games to post an (8-6) decision against Sarah Luffy and Allison Tontz.  Crawford and Richardson dropped an (8-6) match at number one doubles to Rachel Tenuta and Caitlin Dunn.

The Vikings clinched the match with straight set victories in four of the singles matches.  Doemland won (6-0, 6-1) against Ambartsumian at fourth singles and Szczurek was a (6-0, 6-1) winner over Luffy in the fifth slot.  Reece scored the victory with an identical (6-0, 6-1) win at sixth singles against Tontz.  Richardson won the final match of the day (6-3, 6-1) over Dunn to finish the Augustana scoring.

The final match of the week saw the Vikings take on Adrian on Thursday, March 5.  Augustana again led 2-1 after doubles, but only won two of the six singles matches and fell 5-4.  Richardson and Crawford put together a dominating performance and won (8-2) at number one doubles against Katelyn Simcina and Robyn Denney.  Doemland and Sapio also pulled out an (8-5) decision over Shelby Krusewski and Sarah Kean at the second spot to score the second point for the Blue & Gold.  Szczurek and Stukas played a tight match before falling (8-6) at third doubles to Adrienne Haase and Shannon Woods.

Richardson (pictured above) picked up another win in singles, outlasting Simcina (6-1, 7-5) at the top spot.  Crawford was also a winner at number two singles, rallying for a (4-6, 7-5, (10-5) victory.  Doemland dropped the first nine games of her match at third singles to Haase, but fought back to force a third set super tie-breaker, before losing (6-0, 6-7 (1), (10-1)).  Sapio fell (6-4, 6-4) to Krusewski at number four singles.
