2009 Season - Vikings drop 7-5 decision to Rose Hulman in baseball
AUBURNDALE, Florida – Rose Hulman scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and proved to be the difference in the Engineers’ 7-5 victory over Augustana on Friday, March 6 in Auburndale, Florida. In the first game of a double header that featured two seven inning games, Rose Hulman was nursing a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh. The Engineers scored four runs in a rally that began with two outs off Viking reliever Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.). That was enough to withstand a three run Augustana uprising in the bottom of the seventh.
Mike Pagano (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) started for the Vikings and he pitched six innings, scattering eight hits with one strikeout and one walk. He picked up the loss, his first of the year against a pair of victories. Kulig was touched for four runs on six hits in the seventh.
Augustana took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs Don Hansen (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) walked and promptly stole second. He came in on John Wagle’s (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) home run.
Rose Hulman scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to grab a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh. After allowing the four run outburst in the top of the seventh, the Vikings battled back. Down 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) singled to lead things off. Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) walked. After a pop up and a strikeout, the inning stayed alive when Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) reached on an error that moved Lamb to third and scored Hopson. Hansen’s single scored both Ramos and Lamb. Wagle flied out to center field to end the game.
Hopson had two hits to lead the offense as Augustana managed just six hits off a pair of Rose Hulman pitchers (Nick Maloney & Andrew Markowitz).
Augustana fell to 7-2 on the season while Rose Hulman is currently 7-1.
